Morte Maneer
Morte

Monokrom strives to approach history respectfully and to leave a clear trail of references. Morte’s extravagant Baroque capitals are sourced from the title page of a rare Dutch manuscript from 1708. The Opus Mago-Cabalisticum et Theologicum is an influential esoteric work by the German theosophical writer and alchemist Georg Von Welling.

Finding contemporary relevance in past forms requires translation and recontextualisation. Morte Maneer focuses solely on the Opus Mago capitals. This editorial decision allows their unusual proportions and ornate detailing to remain convincing beyond era and medium. The typeface is packed with historical anachronisms, aggressive gestures and pothook serifs.
