Sindre Bremnes’ translation of Mikael Noguchi’s handwriting into a functional typeface is a feat on its own. A number of compromises must be struck to allow the characters to combine in any imaginable permutation – each of them threatening to undermine the features that makes the handstyle unique.

Noguchi’s brush pools ink in surprising spots. His technique forces a different ergonomy of writing, with repercussions in the angle of attack and the application of pressure.

It is Bremnes’ deep knowledge of the “right” form that makes his interpretation of Noguchi’s handwriting so successful. Strictly digital copies of analog letters would not yield an acceptable solution. Instead, the essence is distilled, extracted, and reconstructed for a new medium. The typeface retains the attitude, aggression and insistent flow of the original.
